Discover how our tracking technology can help you
Hand-held radio-telemetry equipment has been used to manually track wildlife movements and collect data on habitat use and survival since the 1970s.
Many endangered and invasive species can only be tracked with Very High Frequency (VHF) radio tags since GPS tags remain too large for more than 70% of the world’s wildlife. However, manual VHF radio telemetry is labour-intensive as it requires wildlife biologists to search for tagged animals one at a time, holding up a yagi antenna and handheld receiver from on the ground for hours on end, where signals are often blocked by landscape features. This is particularly challenging where the tagged animals live in swampy vegetation or precipitous, rocky mountains that are difficult to access on the ground.
Wildlife telemetry is used to track animal movements to then be able to study their behaviour. Without strategic knowledge about how animals use landscapes or how to locate them, the effectiveness of protecting or implementing control measures is limited. Tracking movements and understanding how these animals interact with their environment offers the possibility of more targeted and effective management. In our rapidly changing world, it is more important than ever before to be able to track, monitor and understand our natural world so we can better protect and manage it sustainably.
Wildlife Drones offers the world’s most advanced drone-based radio-telemetry
With a unique combination of easy-to-use hardware and software, Wildlife Drones’ innovative radio-receiver technology can track up to 40 tagged animals simultaneously and get mapped locations in real-time. This empowers wildlife biologists and land managers to find their tagged animals much more efficiently than ever before, freeing up their time and resources to focus on other crucial aspects of their work.
Detects all types of VHF radio-tags
Our wildlife tracking and monitoring system is compatible with all very-high frequency (VHF) radio transmitters with unique frequencies for each tagged animal, regardless of who the tag manufacturer is globally. This includes radio-tags, large and small, that can be attached via glue, collar, implant or harness. Wildlife Drones’ antenna can also be used to remotely download data logs from GPS data loggers with close proximity VHF data download capabilities.
