Wildlife Drones at the TWS

The use of innovative drone radio-telemetry technology for providing insights on bat roosting and foraging behavior across a diversity of landscapes

Managing threatened bat species, and understanding where they roost and how they move across the landscape is critically important for making effective management decisions. However, tracking technologies such as satellite and GPS tags that enable remote data collection are often too expensive and too large and heavy for microbats (and other small bat species). Therefore, this tracking is typically undertaken using Very High Frequency (VHF) radio-transmitter tags and hand-held receivers, which is very labour intensive and time- consuming when tracking highly mobile animals. However, Wildlife Drones innovative aerial radio-tracking technology enables up to 40 bats with unique VHF transmitter frequencies to be tracked simultaneously from the air, including during night foraging and at roosting sites. We will share information on how this technology works and examples of projects where it has been used for a range of threatened species across the US and Australia. Such innovative technology provides new opportunities for improving and expanding bat research, monitoring and conservation projects globally.
