James Wood

Design & Manufacturing Engineer

I have a background in Physics and a passion for making things, including electronics, 3D printing and programming. I enjoy being involved across the whole product lifecycle from design and prototyping to production and customer delivery.

James is the Design & Manufacturing Engineer at Wildlife Drones. He is creative, innovative and a passionate designer who drives further advancement and adaptability of our core technology.

What do you do at Wildlife Drones?

I am creating Prototypes and I build new things. I design and build the hardware and try to improve it with each iteration. Then I test my designs to ensure they last in the real world. I work closely with the tech team to expand our product offerings to include data collection from an increasingly wide array of ecological sensors.

What does a day at work look like for you?

Each day is different which keeps it interesting, usually one or more of the following:
– Designing new parts and printing them out on our 3D printers
– Designing and soldering up PCBs
– Finding and sourcing parts
– Researching and developing hardware solutions for our systems
– Testing parts to make sure they will meet the customers’ needs
– Assembling systems for customers

What do you like most about working at Wildlife Drones and why?

The team; it is such a great workplace to work at. Also, the variety in tasks makes each
day unique, challenging and interesting.

What is your favourite project at Wildlife Drones and why?

Redesigning one of the core parts of the system with multiple improvements.

If you could choose, what animal would you like to track?

Snow leopards

What volunteering or passion projects do you do outside of work?

Recently designed and manufactured a Numpad to match my keyboard as the company doesn’t seem interested in making one. Turned out really well and use it almost every day.
